Standing wave on water glass
I figured that ripples on a glass of water was one way to represent the theme "Loud". After lots of experiments with lenses and flash angles, I finally determined that the best way to capture the ripples was outside, with the water surface reflecting the sky. I used a long telephoto positioned about 6 feet from the glass because closer lenses never quite gave me the depth of field I needed. Exposure times had to be under about 1/200 second to capture the shape of the surface without blurring. A black fiberboard behind the glass helped to isolate the water surface. All I did in Photoshop was an auto-contrast enhancement. And to answer the obvious question, no, I didn't really use loud noise to create the ripples; it was an electric, variable-speed back massager attached underneath the table!
